Ecological rehabilitation and long term monitoring of post mining areas
REECOL was presented to attendees at a workshop organized by VUHU Most in Dolní Vítkovice (the Lower Vítkovice Area), Ostrava, Czech Republic. The event brought together representatives from several European project partnerships to share knowledge and foster collaboration.The presentation was delivered by the project coordinator, Poltegor-Instytut.
The workshop complemented the kick-off meetings of the FRAM and MEMO projects.
REECOL was showcased at the Conference of PhD Students and Young Scientists (#CPSYS), by Makary Musiałek from our coordinating partner Poltegor-Instytut. The presentation titled “Continuation of Research on the Integrated Approach to Monitoring Post-Mining Land Reclamation – Selected Aspects of the REECOL Project” focused on the monitoring of rehabilitation at study plots in the Konin Lignite Basin (Poland).
At the 13th SUITMA Conference (Soils of Urban, Industrial, Traffic, Mining and Military Areas), BRGM delivered a presentation titled “Mine Soil Rehabilitation: Integrating Field-Based Approaches and Remote Sensing Tools.”
Results of research within REECOL have been presented in the monograph ‘Innovative Green Economy. Part 6. Climate and Biodiversity’, in the chapter ‘Reclamation of Post-Mining Areas in the Context of Adapting to Climate Change and Protecting Biodiversity‘.

At the EURECA-PRO 4th International Conference on Responsible Consumption and Production (22-24.09.2025, Chania, Crete), the project partner TUC (the School of Mineral Resources Engineering) presented its ongoing research projects during Session II: Clustering Workshop on Sustainable Pathways in Critical Raw Materials and Post-Mining Transitions.
In the presentation “Innovative Approaches for Sustainable Transition of Former Coal Sites: A Review of ErEnMine, MidSafe, and REECOL research projects”, the activities of #REECOL project were presented and the synergies with the other research projects were highlighted. Key information about #REECOL was also communicated to the conference attendees through the project’s informative roll-up banner.
REECOL was presented to attendees of TUR 2025 conference organized by Akademia Górniczo-Hutnicza w Krakowie and The Polish Ceramic Society. Instytut KOMAG gave a presentation about the development and field tests of technology of non-contact soil remediation technology developed by them in the project. Today, project partners met and discussed the current tasks. Arrangaments regarding upcoming activities were also made.
Based on the research carried out in REECOL, TUC elaborated a scientific paper entitled: Spatiotemporal Analysis of Vegetation Health and Moisture Dynamics in Rehabilitated Mining Quarries Using Satellite Imagery. It has been published in Environmental Processes (Springer Nature).

REECOL partners’ monthly meeting took place. The main focus was on work packages WP4, WP5 and WP6 – current and future activiites. Upcoming progress meeting in Poland was also shortly discussed.
The project partners from Greece – TUC and PPC met online. They discussed the activities related to the development of the audit catalogue used to evaluate and certify the best practice of the ecological rehabilitation in post-mining areas, which is a subject of work package 6 (WP6) of the project. In particular they discussed the development of guidelines for the users of this audit catalogue.
